Opposition and Being ALL IN!

Nehemiah 4:1-23

 

The Threat:

 

  • The people were discouraged because of opposition. 4:1-3, 7-8,11
  • The people were discouraged because they were exhausted. 4:10a
  • The people were discouraged because the work seemed overwhelming. 4:10b
  • The people were discouraged because of the message from their neighbors.  4:12

The response:

 

  • Nehemiah prayed to the Lord in response to the threats of the enemy. 4:4-5,9a
  • Nehemiah praised the people for working with all their heart. 4:6
  • Nehemiah developed a protection plan for the faithful as they rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. 4:9b,13-14a,16-18,21-22
  • Nehemiah reminded the faithful of the character of God in order to encourage them while accomplishing the plan of God.
    • God is a righteous judge. 4:4-5
    • God is great. 4:14b
    • God is awesome. 4:14b
    • God is our defender. 4:15,20b
    • Nehemiah and his men set the example for the people by tirelessly working to protect the faithful. 4:23

You are encouraged to continue in the work of God when you …

  • Pray for God to deal justly with the opposition.
  • Focus on the character of God.
  • Follow a godly and courageous leader.
  • Join with others who are faithfully engaged in the work.

Main Idea: You are able to faithfully continue in the work of God and overcome discouragement when you trust the character of God.
